Apple's Journey Down a New Road

I recently read an article titled, "Apple Inc gets permit to test self-driving cars in California, opens door to build tech for companies". In this article, Goel discusses the fact that Apple is planning to start testing self-driving cars, which he suggests is a signal that this tech company is starting a route to designing or building their own autonomous vehicle technology.

Apple has been quiet about their own self-driving car project, called Project Titan. While the company has not publicly acknowledged that the project does exist, it appears as though they are entering into a different sector of the tech industry.

Throughout this course, we have discussed many components of innovative technology. In the article "Heterarchy: The Organization of Dissonance" by David Stark, he mentions the idea that in many scenarios, a number of companies do not know what kind of products they will be producing in the future. He states that functions of exploration are generalized throughout an organization. The components of Stark's article can be demonstrated with this example of Apple and their ideas to begin developing technology in the field of autonomous vehicles.

People may have never imagined that Apple, a company known for their smartphone and computer technology, would ever be one to enter into the market of self-driving automobiles. However, after reading this article, it seems obvious that their next innovative venture would be to enter themselves into the market. Their established and successful brand will be the perfect way to enter a new field and keep up with the competition in all aspects of the technology industry.

What do you think of their new path to immerse themselves in the self-driving car industry? Do you think it is a good idea, or should they simply stick to what they already know how to do well? What other tech industries could you envision Apple becoming a part of in the coming years? Let me know your thoughts on this topic!

  1. In my opinion, Apple is broadening their focus of products produced to remain a competitor against heavy-hitter Google. Furthermore, I'm not surprised they decided on self driving cars as Google released their project referred to as WAYMO (A New Way Forward in Mobility). I believe this is a good idea for the company to expand, but they must remain focused on smartphone and computer technology as they clearly dominate these sectors.

  2. Similar to Nick's response, I also believe Apple should branch off and immerse themselves in the market of self-driving automobiles. I think Apple has such a unique culture and way of innovating that they would continue to be a tech leader in almost any technology based market they enter.

  3. Personally, I view Apple as all things technology - especially after the creation of the Apple watch and Touch Bar. Both these new innovations remain special to Apple and have yet to be copied - further have proved to be quite successful and thus I could suggest Apple expand their focus on products to further themselves in the market and attract and even larger consumer base.
