Google announced in 2016 that they were bringing their Google.org Impact Challenge to Canada for the first time. This nationwide competition to invest in and fun companies who are found to be the most innovative non-profits set out to make Canada and the rest of the world a better environment to live in. The prize will allow 10 organizations to split a $5 million prize to assist in funding and bringing their plans to life. The director of Google.org, Jacquelline Fuller, believes that innovative technologies have the power within them to actually change lives. She explains how they have witnessed first hand how this can happen and illustrates how they are excited to see how Canada will perform under these challenge guidelines. The winners will be selected through a public process and also through a live exhibition.
Here are some of the winning nonprofit companies.
The Rumie Initiative - Provides access to the best learning resources for indigenous youth.
Victoria Hand Project - Providing affordable 3-D prosthetics for people around the world.
PeaceGeeks Society - A platform connecting all newcomers with immigrant services.
Personally, I believe Googles competition provides the opportunity for smaller businesses and nonprofits to further pursue their operations if their own system is properly constructed. I also believe that major corporations such as Google should be constantly providing these competitions in order to promote the progression of innovation changing lives.
Q: Do you have any other examples of where major scale competitions take place like this example?

Hi Nick,
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Although it is not nearly as big as Google's Impact Challenge, I thought of Laurier's New Venture and Pepsi Co. Pitch competitions. It gives young business students and entrepreneurs a chance to pitch their business ideas to a group of professionals and hopefully have something come out of it by the time the contest is over. With the proper feedback and guidance, along with Laurier's resources such as LaunchPad, young entrepreneurs are presented with the chance to fund and develop their new venture ideas.
