Ontario has fostered a variety of startups in the past years of all different types, specifically technological startups. Unfortunately, many of these startups end up having to exit or relocate to places that are better suitable for their firm. Ontario needs to find a startup cluster that suits the environment and works off of the resources already available. Aird & Berlis LLP explain in their article that cyber security could be the next cluster to focus on in the Ontario area. This is important for the startup community because Ontario is struggling to find its place in the larger picture and needs to find a sector to specifically focus on. Aird & Berlis LLP further that "the province is home to leading experts and commentators on cyber-security, providing thought leadership and boosting traction. There is also significant access to capital from VCs, pension funds and government, allowing growth companies to scale when ready". Cyber-security is an interesting and upcoming sector that already has some companies existing within Ontario, but there is room for others to compete. When looking into new sectors and up and coming clusters it is important to consider the interests of those involved, Nee and Swedberg explain that "interests drive the actions of the individuals, and that these interests come together in a very specific way in capitalism. The actors in society are driven by a variety of interests—political, economic, legal, and so on" (5). The other actors involved when discussing cyber security are important. First off, due to societies commitment to technology the safety of online information has become much more real. For this reason a lot of big actors have begun to invest in cyber security and the companies looking to innovate the sector.
There is also an issue with the cyber-security sector. First of all it is also one that can easily be abused by the state and private powers. If this becomes an interest within Ontario the population needs to be wary of what could happen.
